1944年，特乔出生在美国加利福尼亚州洛杉矶，母亲爱丽丝·维拉，父亲丹·特乔，是一个工人。[1][2][3][4] 特乔具有墨西哥血统。[5] 特乔的表亲是著名导演罗伯特·罗德里格兹。[6][7]

崔喬在接受喬丹·哈賓格訪問時提到，如果有人邀請他扮演犯罪者時，他只接受那名角色的結局是死亡或是入獄的邀請。他認為：「避免傳達錯誤訊息給孩子們，應展示毒品和犯罪生活可能導致的下場。」 [8][9]
