  • Significance: The American Can Company became the world's largest can-making company in 1908 when it purchased the Sanitary Can Company of New York. Acquisition of this site, the Norton Tin Plate Company, was crucial to its growth and helped provide the impetus for this merger. Among the first to use a fully automated production line, this plant was also instrumental in the development of the sanitary can, which was universally adopted prior to World War I.
