尼瓦拉1972年出生在美國麻薩諸塞州波士頓。他的母親維吉尼亞是藝術家[1][2][3]。父親彼得羅·尼瓦拉是大學政治學教授和作家[4][5][6]。母親有英國血統[7]。祖父是義大利人[8]。祖母是德國猶太人[9][10][11][12]。
