Execution at Basel of seven of the "ringleaders" of the Swiss peasant war of 1653 on July 24, 1653. Six were decapitated, one was hanged (Uly Schad, in the background right) at the gallows on the Gellert. ("Gellert" is the name of the hill.)[1]

  • Original source: see Image:Executions Basel 1653.jpg. The coloration may well also be contemporary, but this is not entirely certain. Messmer just states the image showed a "Colorized engraving from 1653". However, the coloring is certainly not modern.
