This species is known in Australia from Darwin, Northern Territory, to Moreton Bay, Queensland. It is found elsewhere in New Caledonia and Taiwan. It is also known as the Giant Oystercracker Dart and the Oyster Pompano.

Its body is a silvery greenish to bluish-grey above and paler below, sometimes with a bronze or greenish-golden tinge. The second dorsal and caudal fins are dusky orange to nearly black with darker leading edges and fin tips. The anal fin is a bright to a brownish-yellow, and the pelvic fins are pale to bright yellow. The pectoral fins are dark.
