Peppermint Linux OS 是一個以雲為中心的操作系統，它基於Ubuntu Linux 操作系統的派生Lubuntu, 使用LXDE 桌面環境.^[4] Peppermint的開發者說明他們的理念是為使用Linux的新手提供一個熟悉的耗費較低資源的操作環境。^[5]^[6]^[7]^[8]

設計理念[編輯]

Peppermint OS 自帶較少的原生應用和一個傳統的桌面界面。將Peppermint變得獨一無二的源於其混合集成雲端和本地應用的策略。^[9]為了替代傳統的有常用功能的（比如文本處理，圖像編輯）原生應用，它允許用戶創建基於特殊站點的自定義瀏覽器冰應用（Ice application）

命名來源[編輯]

Peppermint'的名字類似於Linux Mint.^[10] 開發者原本想要充分利用來自Linux Mint的開源的配置文件和應用程序使其只需更少的資源需求並且成為更加專注於基於網絡的集成開發環境。他們發現，這種概念就像是給Mint添加了香料，因此胡椒粉（英語：Peppermint）就渾然天成。^[7]

與Linux Mint因使用其Cinnamon 桌面而著名相對應的是，Peppermint 基於LXDE的關鍵功能使用了輕量的默認桌面。就這樣，至少於2010年的Peppermint 1.0發布，代表着它逐漸演變成了一款Linux發行版。^[11]
