兩伊戰爭期間，科威特支持伊拉克，[3] 結果伊朗與科威特的關係出現惡化。伊朗方面表示若遇到科威特船隻將會攻擊[4]。海灣戰爭前伊朗譴責伊拉克入侵科威特，科威特與伊朗之間的關係又有所改善。 [5]
近期歷史[編輯]
儘管美國對科威特施壓，要求科威特與伊朗斷絕來往，但科威特繼續與伊朗保持友好關係。2016年沙烏地駐伊朗外交使領館遭到襲擊後，科威特拒絕追隨沙烏地阿拉伯與伊朗斷交，而是繼續與伊朗維持外交關係，不過科威特和伊朗的外交關係級別降低，並且科威特宣布召回科威特駐伊朗大使。[6][3]
美國退出聯合全面行動計畫後，科威特依舊與伊朗維持外交關係[7][3] 。
2019冠狀病毒病疫情期間，科威特向伊朗提供了1000萬美元的人道主義援助。 [8][9]
2022年8月15日，科威特重新向伊朗派駐大使，兩國關係提升至大使級[10]。
