犹他州位于美国西部山区[1]，自1896年1月加入联邦以来，该州共参与过32场总统选举。在1896年美国总统选举中，民主党候选人威廉·詹宁斯·布莱恩以83%的得票率轻松赢下了犹他州。[2]然而在随后的四年里，共和党开始在犹他州的总统选举中占优，这种状况一直持续到1932年的选举。[3]在1912年美国总统选举中，时任总统威廉·霍华德·塔夫脱只赢得了佛蒙特州和犹他州，未能获得连任。[4]在1932年美国总统选举中，民主党候选人富兰克林·罗斯福赢得了犹他州并获得了最终的胜利，[5]此后民主党一直在犹他州占据优势直至1952年美国总统选举。[3]
