英國電影協會是1933年英国成立的慈善组织，“对影视文化贡献突出”者可获会士头衔，是该机构的最高荣誉，[1]英国演员尊·赫就称该奖是“世间最高荣誉”[2]。

1983年是英国电影协会50周年和英国电影协会国家档案馆25周年，协会首度颁发会士头衔，截至2020年共有87名会士[3]。奖项不一定每年颁发但颁奖典礼均在伦敦举办，有时是倫敦影展时在国家电影院授奖[2]。首届颁奖典礼共授予六人会士头衔，分别是法国导演马赛尔·卡尔内，英国导演大卫·利恩、麥可·鮑爾，匈牙利编剧艾默利·普萊斯柏格，印度电影人萨蒂亚吉特·雷伊，美国导演兼演员奧森·威爾斯。最近获奖的阿曼达·内维尔（Amanda Nevill）长期担任协会首席执行官。[4]哈維·溫斯坦曾于2002年获得会士头衔，但在2017年因大量性骚扰或性侵指控剥夺故未统计在内[5]。

英国电影协会共授予88人会士头衔，其中英国人59名，剩下的29人大多来自英国或法国。非洲入选的两人都是导演，分别是马里人苏莱曼·西塞和塞内加尔人乌斯曼·塞姆班，另外日本、印度、苏联、加拿大、澳大利亚、奥地利、爱尔兰各一人。
